One of the most recent lessons I have learned about simply embracing life has come about in just the last few months. Several years ago I decided to quit torturing myself with new year’s resolutions and choose just one word to be my focus for the coming year. My word for 2016 is “Fresh.” As I have endeavored to incorporate more “fresh” into my life, I have come to appreciate its importance. I have very poor eyesight. The world is quite blurry and difficult for me to navigate without my contacts in or glasses on. Especially at night. I become easily disoriented and stumble along, hoping that I won’t encounter any obstacles in my path. I can navigate so much more confidently when my vision is clear. The same is true for our lives in general. If we don’t have a clear vision for our future, then we will find ourselves stumbling through our days, hoping that we won’t run into any major obstacles along the way. Surviving, but not really thriving.
When was the last time you took a moment to really consider your priorities in life? I have discovered that ordering my priorities isn’t just a one-time experience. If I want to make the most of the time I have, then I need to revisit my order of priorities often. Otherwise it is just too easy to get distracted by other stuff. If you are genuinely interested in a reality check in this area, then take some time to honestly examine your daily choices. You see, our choices reflect our priorities. Most of us live very busy lives. It’s true. We hear about it in the media every day. We tell each other about how busy we are when we meet up. “How are you?” “Oh, I’m just so busy right now!” We wear our busyness like a badge of honor. As if it gives our lives significance and value. But being busy does not mean that we are being productive. All of that running around wears us out without really getting us anywhere. Soon we can become disenchanted with our lives. Decisions. Our daily lives are filled with decisions. When to get up, what to eat, how to spend our money, how to care for our families. The list goes on and on. Some decisions are easy. Some are overwhelming. It can be exhausting and soon we feel completely bogged down. Life is happening to us and we’ve lost control. All we can do is hang on and endure to the end. Sounds depressing, doesn’t it? When we feel like life is just happening to us, it is easy to settle into a reactive mindset. We assume a defensive position and
